About gout

Gout is a form of arthritis (a disease that affects joints). Gout happens when
the body has too much uric acid. This extra uric acid creates crystals that build around and settle in the joints. The build-up of uric acid causes attacks (also called flares) of painful and swollen joints, and tophi (swollen growths around joints).

What is a clinical research study?

A clinical research study is a medical study that helps to answer important questions about an investigational medication, such as:

All medications must be tested in clinical research studies before they can be
approved to prescribe to patients. Without people taking part in these studies, we would have no new medications.

People may experience chronic gout in different ways. We work to make sure that our studies include people of different races, ethnicities, genders, ages, and backgrounds. This helps us to see how the study drug works for different people who are impacted by gout.
